Are You Entitled To A Rental Car After A Car Accident?

One of the biggest inconveniences after getting into an auto accident is having to be without your vehicle while it is getting evaluated and/or fixed. Some may have to take it to the body shop and leave it there to get repaired for an ample period of time until its completely fixed. Others may have a more severe accident where their car is determined a total loss but, the car may be at a tow yard for some time until an adjuster can properly evaluate the damage. In either situation, you are without a vehicle. However, you might be entitled to a rental car after a car accident.

Rental Car Coverage On Own Insurance

If you are involved in an accident, you may have purchased rental car coverage on your own policy. This means that some, if not all, of your rental car costs may be covered. This is something that, if you do not currently have on your policy, you should absolutely obtain immediately. We cannot tell how inconvenient clients have expressed it is to be without a vehicle while waiting for the insurance company to evaluate your vehicle and/or waiting for your vehicle to be fixed.

Rental Coverage Car On Other Party’s Insurance

If the other party is at fault, you could be entitled a rental car that may be covered by the other party’s insurance. Now, rental car coverage is not required coverage in Florida, only liability coverage and PIP coverage is required. So, as we stated above, it is best to cover yourself and not gamble with another party having rental car coverage on their insurance policy. If you do not feel comfortable asking the at-fault party’s adjuster if there is rental car coverage, not to worry. We would be happy to inquire for you.

Out Of Pocket Transportation

If neither you nor the other party has rental car coverage, you might be responsible for finding transportation and obtaining a rental car at your cost. Now remember, you can still use Lyft, Uber, a Taxi, or ask a friend for a ride while waiting for your car to be fixed or to be evaluated by an adjuster. Be sure to keep track of those out of pocket expenses and provide those to your attorney.
