Traffic Lights: Not A Suggestion

Traffic Lights: Not A Suggestion

Often times, many try to take the traffic laws into their own hands, this is especially true when it comes to traffic lights. Many try to gamble with speed and time and they try to hurry up to sneak through that yellow light at the last second. Others may even go through a red light causing the likelihood of an accident to go up substantially. This can be incredibly dangerous and the lack of care can result in a catastrophic accident that may include severe injuries.

We have all seen it, especially during our morning and evening commutes. Someone is late to work and is in a hurry so they do not get in trouble. Or, someone just might be exhausted from the day and wants to rush home. Yet, these are not excuses to ignore a traffic light. It is up to us to follow traffic lights and to operate our vehicles safely on the road.

Traffic Light Meanings

Traffic lights have different meanings. Although many of us are most familiar with red, yellow, and green, what do the arrows and flashing lights mean?

Red – A red light means STOP, do not go.

Red Arrow – A red arrow means STOP and do not go until the arrow is green or the light is green. Often times, a sign will appear that says do not turn on red signal or do not turn until green.

Flashing Red – A flashing red signal means STOP, then proceed with caution.

Yellow – A yellow light means slow down and proceed with caution. Only proceed if you can SAFELY make it through the light.

Flashing Yellow – A flashing yellow light means slow down and proceed with caution. Be vigilant of other traffic.

Yellow Arrow – A flashing yellow arrow means that a red arrow will be appearing. Slow down and stop if you cannot make it SAFELY through the light.

Green – A green light means GO, but be vigilant of others on the road and proceed safely.

Green Arrow – A green arrow means GO, but again, be vigilant of others on the road and proceed safely.

Blackout Signal – A signal that is blackout or in other words, is not working properly, operates as a four-way stop.
